What is Ful Medames?
Ful Medames is a traditional Arabic food, basically Egyptian of dried fava beans. It tastes delicious. The Arabic people like to eat it the most. Almost, in all the meals, people love to eat it, wherever they are. Restaurants also serve it as mezze.
Ful Medames is pre-Ottoman and pre-Islamic. In some places, it is said to be as old as the Pharaohs because fava beans have been found in pharaonic tombs. According to Arabs, “Beans have satisfied even the Pharaohs”. There are fields of them.
Different sizes of dried fava beans exist. The tourists, especially expatriates, love the canned ones with flavorings.
How to cook?
Time needed: 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Here, we will show you the steps of how to make Ful Medames at home.
- Egyptian fava beans (Ful Medames)
Take 450 grams of fava beans (Ful Medames). Wash them. Boil these beans for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and cool them. Also let them soak for 1 hour.
After one hour, drain the beans in a large saucepan. Wash them and transfer them to a 5-liter large pot. Also add fresh water to keep them covered.
Add 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of salt in pot.
- Tomatoes, Onions, Lemon slices, Garlic cloves, Coriander and a little Olive oil
Add 2 medium tomatoes (chopped), 1 medium onion (chopped), 4 garlic cloves (minced), 2 lemon slices, 80 grams coriander (chopped) and also, a little olive oil in the pot. Cook on medium heat for about one hour. Stir after every 15 minutes. In the end, it will become fosse. Moreover, mash them a little.
- Soup Bowls
Serve the dish in soup bowls with Arabic Bread.
- Optional Garnishes – Eggs, Olives, Salad, Sauces, Cheese with Olive Oil
In garnishes, especially, olive oil is must added with peel hard-boiled eggs, green olives, black olives, red onions, red chili flakes, salad, cheese, Tahini cream sauce, Garlicky tomato sauce and sometimes, black pepper.
