There comes a point in our lives when we must move on. At this point we need to learn to blend in a new environment and adjust in a new institution. For some of us it comes quite easy, but for others it is a constant source of discomfort and can lead to serious disasters. Here we are with few very practical tips to adjust in a new institution:
1-BLEND IN YOUR APPREANCE
You may just not pay much attention to dressing, but it is a very essential thing. Consider a student wearing Shalwar Kameez in Stanford. Is he going to adjust easily? NO. I am not saying to give up your entire looks and turn from Bin Laden to James Bond in a day. All you must do is not to dress too flashy. Avoid something that stands out and looks awkward. Looking good will allow others to access you easily.
2-WORK ON YOUR BODY LANGUAGE
How can you expect to adjust, while all you do is putting your head down and trembling nervously? In a new institution, most of the people are lacking confident. They are too nervous to even make plain simple eye contact. All you have to do is to look up. Keep your back and shoulders straight. Keep a pleasant smile and boom!! You are the new Rockstar. This will allow you to be open, and attract people, allowing you to adjust easily.
3-GREET AND START A CONVERSATION
We all love someone that just comes to us and say “good morning, how are you doing? “. This simple greeting and an open-ended question work hell. This will let you make new friends and know more people. And we know that all we need to adjust are few good friends. You should then ask for a simple favor, so that they can also ask a favor in return, strengthening the bond.
4-BE ACTIVE IN ALL ACTIVITIES
Probably at the start of a course in the new institution, they are going to be a lot of activities. Just do not be afraid to participate in them. Even if you loose badly in that game or activity, but it will take that fear out of you. Doing this will expose you to more people, give you beautiful memories and a lot of laughter making you feel relaxed.
5- JOIN SOCIETIES AND CLUBS
This seems like an obvious way to adjust in a new institution. But still some student finds it hard to do it. They are so nervous that they do not even apply in societies. But let me tell you that, societies are as essentials as anything else. They will not only help you to adjust but will also groom you and allow you to make contacts. Just do not think about results and apply in every society. Go take all interviews and then if you are selected in too many, you can easily leave some.
